Our good friend and PR mentor Alan Weinkrantz, who helped us develop our blog, suggested that on occasion we should post a personal recommendation or book review.  So, since the Holiday season is upon us, I thought it would be a good time to share a book recommendation.

This year I read the “Border Trilogy” by Cormac McCarthy.  The trilogy is comprised of “All the Pretty Horses”, “The Crossing”, and “Cities of the Plain”.  While the books have been in publication for over 10 years, I had not read them, and was not enthusiastic when a friend highly recommended I do so.  I was wrong.  They are some of the best books I have ever read, and I am convinced that Mr. McCarthy is one of our greatest American authors.

The books are set in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico and follow the lives and adventures of two cowboys as their lives intersect.  The fact that the books are some of the most beautifully written, and that the stories are riveting is indisputable.  However, one of the most poignant highlights and lessons of the stories was the generosity towards strangers that was exhibited by individuals, many of whom were of  extremely modest means.  Throughout all three books, the two cowboys were taken in and given food, shelter, medical attention and comfort from complete strangers with nothing expected in return.

At this time of year let us all remember to be kind to the strangers who cross our paths;  to give food to the hungry and shelter to those who need it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
