picture-31I recently re-read Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzalez. He is a contributing editor to National Geographic Adventure Magazine, and he has studied survivors’ stories extensively in order to see if survivors have anything in common.

He states that when faced with an extreme situation, 90% of people will freeze up or panic, and 10% will stay focused and calm. The common traits that he found among survivors were training, experience, stoicism, and a capacity for logic to override emotion. These traits certainly seem to apply to the crew and passengers of Flight 1549 as well as all the boat crews that rescued the passengers.

While most of the stories focus on life and death situations, Gonzalez thinks that the same traits can apply to coping with business setbacks, illness, divorce, or addiction. I couldn’t put this book down, and I keep trying to apply the lessons learned to how I deal with all the volatility in our business.
