What I’ve Learned From My Clients Over 25 Years

The collective wisdom of my clients provides me with a unique insight not only into investing, but into the human psyche as it comes to long term, strategic investing.. Here are some important things that I’ve learned from my clients over the years:

  • Being a good listener is as important as being a good speaker
  • Listen first. Then speak.
  • Simple and clear is better than complicated and opaque
  • Never compromise on key principles, but be flexible when the environment changes
  • Nothing is more important than family and friends
  • Everyone makes mistakes, but your character is revealed in how you handle it

Portfolio construction is not handed down from the advisor to the client. It is an interactive process that requires lots of input from the client about their personal and family situation, goals, and tolerance for risk. All these inputs can also change over time, so staying in touch is one of the keys to a successful, long term relationship.
